QUICKFIRE Q&A WITH HAWI’S FOUNDER, EMILY!

To celebrate International Women’s Day and girl bosses everywhere, we had a chat with our founder, Emily, to learn a little more about her, Hawi’s origins and future plans!

 1. How did Hawi originate?

I was looking for a gift for one of my friends who was having a baby. I wanted to get several things and bundle them together, but I couldn’t quite get what I wanted. I began to seriously think about starting my own gift boxes that focused on quality, premium Australian products. Fast-forward to now, and the rest as they say, is history!

2. What’s the story behind the Hawi name?

I wanted a name that represented my Kenyan heritage. Hawi translates to blessings/good luck in English and is something you’d say when wishing someone all the best. It felt like a genuine and heartfelt link that was perfect when it comes to gift giving!

3. Who has shaped/inspired you in life/business? Any advice for other solopreneurs?

My dad has always been my inspiration in anything and everything I do in life, and that also naturally comes across with how I conduct business.

My family and friends are also huge supporters and have really made a lot of Hawi dreams a reality.

In terms of advice, I would suggest a business coach if you can! I regularly speak with Mark Trim, who has been instrumental in the growth of Hawi. I reached out to him at a time when I wanted growth, but wasn’t sure how and so much positive change has happened since!

4. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt over the last year or challenge you’ve faced?

I’ve definitely learnt the importance of consistency. If you stick to something, it does eventually pay off!

I’m not known to be the most patient person, and one of the hardest challenges has been wanting to grow. I’m proud that Hawi has really grown over the last year, but the “growing pains” have been real! There have been obstacles to overcome when it comes to keeping up with supply, packaging and maintaining quality during a pandemic.

5. What does the Hawi community mean to you?

I can’t even put it into words! I could never have imagined such an amazing community of likeminded, kind gifters who are equally as passionate about amazing Aussie products.

The Hawi tribe is why I continue to be inspired and motivated to innovate and create new gifting experiences. Thank you from my heart to yours!

 6. What are your hopes or goals for the year ahead?

I’m so excited that we are relaunching our online store to be bigger and better than ever.

I also can’t wait to open the first Hawi physical store in Adelaide (Hawi’s birthplace). It’s something I never really thought would happen and my goal is to offer a unique experience to customers above and beyond the gifting element.

 7. What’s your most memorable moment since beginning Hawi?

I had an idea to create a physical gifting workshop event at the end of last year, to coincide with the festive season. I had no idea if anyone would come, because it’s something quite new.

I just knew I wanted to create an afternoon of fun, laughter, great food, drinks, and of course, gifting.

To my surprise it was such a great time, and I am still hearing positive feedback from attendees months later. I can’t wait to plan something even more exciting for this year!

8. Okay, last question - what’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

I have received some truly magical and memorable gifts over the years, and this might sound surprising, but I actually don’t think there’s anything wrong with self-gifting #treatyourself.

I would gift any one of our Hawi gift boxes and hampers to myself for some self-care and “me time”. In fact, I’d probably curate and build my own gift to be full of pamper products and delicious Australian treats (chocolate and nuts are my favourite combo).
